Evergreen School Board members voted Tuesday (December 28) to endorse John Boyd as interim principal of Evergreen Public Schools. Boyd was offered the job after interviewing school board members and a group of school administrators and district staff. “John’s experience covers all areas that are important to the district, including a proven pedagogical leader, adaptable to a changing learning environment, a commitment to diversity, as well as recent strategic plan development. His experience also includes time spent in large districts, as well as a small district, so that he understands school systems and constituents, ”said Board Chair Victoria Bradford.

Boyd, who is fluent in Spanish and also speaks Mandarin, began his school career as a Para-educator, moved on to teaching, then served as Principal and Head of Education and has now spent eight years as a superintendent. He has worked in large school districts including Seattle, Edmonds and Highline. While superintendent in Quincy, a smaller rural district, he increased test scores and graduation rates while implementing culturally appropriate supports for multilingual students and families, as well as overseeing a facility bond and construction work. He also led a team that successfully connected students in a rural 450 square mile district during distance learning.

Boyd said he had candid conversations with the district’s board of directors and staff leadership team. “I am excited for the challenge. Evergreen has made great strides in improving student growth and outcomes over the past decade. We must now refocus the work of the district on this pedagogical basis and help the schools to move forward. ”

Boyd will move to this new role after the start of 2022, pending the finalization of a contract.
